What Is Opera AI (Formerly Aria)? 

Opera AI (formerly known as Aria and rebranded to Opera AI in late 2025) is an integrated artificial intelligence feature built into the Opera browser, available on both desktop and mobile platforms. It provides users with an embedded chat experience directly within the browser, allowing them to interact with AI tools without switching apps or opening separate windows.

The feature works as part of the browsing experience, enhancing how users search, generate content, or interact with web pages. Opera AI is free and unlimited, providing real-time assistance within the browser interface.

Key Features of the Opera AI Assistant

Opera AI enhances the browsing experience by embedding artificial intelligence directly into the Opera browser. It helps users search, create, and interact with content more efficiently without leaving the browser. The integration is consistent across desktop and mobile platforms, offering fast, in-context assistance for everyday browsing tasks.

Key features include:

  • Context-aware browsing: Opera AI understands the content of your current tabs and adapts responses accordingly. It can interact with page content, summarize articles, and even help manage open tabs, improving multitasking and navigation.
  • Instant access, no account required: Users can use Opera AI tools immediately without creating an account. The assistant is embedded in the sidebar and near the search bar, making it available at all times.
  • Integrated ChatGPT support: Opera includes built-in access to ChatGPT, enabling quick content generation and question-answering without leaving the page or opening a separate tab.
  • Real-time answers with live web access: Opera AI retrieves up-to-date information directly from the web. This makes it effective for current events, research, and time-sensitive queries.
  • Free image generation: Users can generate high-quality images directly in the browser at no cost. Opera AI automatically adapts image dimensions for desktop or mobile, such as wallpapers or illustrations.
  • AI-powered video and document analysis: Opera AI can analyze YouTube videos, summarize their content, and provide translations. It also works with PDFs and other documents, delivering concise summaries on demand.
  • Creative and academic tools: Beyond casual use, Opera AI helps generate structured content like formatted equations, making it useful for scientific and educational tasks.
  • Modular responses and summaries: Instead of sending users through search result pages, Opera AI provides direct, organized answers (often compiled from multiple sources) with supporting links when needed.

Getting Started with Opera AI

Installation

To begin using Opera AI, users must first ensure they have the latest version of the Opera browser. On both Windows and Mac, this can be done by going to Opera → About Opera from the main browser menu. This step checks for updates and installs the latest version if needed.

Once updated, click the Aria icon in the sidebar. A banner will appear in the chat inviting you to upgrade to Opera AI. Click “Upgrade” and then confirm by selecting “Restart Opera” in the dialog that follows. After restarting, Opera AI will be available in the browser, replacing Aria.

The new Opera AI is accessible via the “Ask AI” button in the top-right corner of the interface. Clicking it opens a side panel for chat and interaction. Unlike the previous overlay model, the panel sits alongside your current content for persistent multitasking. Existing chat history from Aria is preserved and transferred during the upgrade.

Setup

To use Opera AI, you must explicitly grant it access to read page content. This is controlled via a toggle at the top of the chat interface, just under the close button. If disabled, the AI won’t use page context for responses. This approach ensures user privacy by limiting the AI’s visibility to only the active tab or Tab Island, without sending broader browsing data.

Opera AI also supports voice interaction. A microphone icon next to the text input allows speech-to-text entry, and a speaker icon at the end of responses lets users hear the answer aloud using text-to-speech.

Using Opera AI

You can upload supported files such as PDFs, spreadsheets, videos, audio, and text documents using the clipboard icon under the input field. Opera AI can analyze the content and answer questions about the uploaded material. It also includes a snapshot tool to capture and share AI responses quickly.

Finally, users can generate custom wallpapers using image prompts. Simply describe the desired design in the chat and specify orientation (horizontal or vertical) to match desktop or mobile screen dimensions.

No separate app is needed. Once enabled, Opera AI runs entirely within the browser and is ready to use immediately after setup.

Pros and Cons of Opera AI 

Opera AI offers a range of integrated AI features for browsing and content creation. While it provides useful functionality for everyday users, it also has clear limitations depending on the use case.

Pros

  • Browser integration: Opera AI is built directly into the Opera browser and accessible via the sidebar or keyboard shortcut. This integration makes it easy to interact with the AI without disrupting the workflow.
  • Context-aware assistance: With features like Page Context Mode, users can ask questions about the specific content of the page they’re viewing (such as summarizing an article or identifying key points) without copying and pasting.
  • Text and content tools: Opera AI supports composing emails, articles, or posts using preset tones and lengths. Tools like “Reuse” and “Rephrase” help refine answers without starting over, offering more control over AI-generated content.
  • Live web access: Unlike static models, Opera AI pulls real-time information from the web. This makes it more useful for current events, recent data, and time-sensitive queries.
  • Quick actions on highlighted text: Users can highlight text on a webpage and instantly get summaries, explanations, or translations through Opera AI’s “Highlight to Act” feature.

Cons

  • Inconsistent accuracy: One of the most common complaints is that Opera AI sometimes returns incorrect or misleading information. Users have reported failures on basic tasks, such as simple math or factual lookups.
  • Weak memory and context handling: Opera AI struggles to remember earlier parts of a conversation. Users often have to repeat information or paste previous messages to maintain continuity in longer chats.
  • Limited content quality for images: While it includes image generation capabilities, user feedback suggests that the output is far below the quality of specialized AI art tools, with some results being described as unusable.
  • Bias and over-filtering: Opera AI may refuse to answer certain questions or offer responses with a perceived bias. This can limit its usefulness for nuanced or sensitive topics.
  • Lacks customization and business integration: Opera AI is a general-purpose AI with no ability to connect to external tools, private data, or internal systems. It can’t be tailored for business workflows or trained on proprietary knowledge, making it unsuitable for enterprise use.

Opera AI Security Issues 

Opera AI has faced notable security challenges that highlight the complexity of embedding AI into web environments. Two significant vulnerabilities were disclosed in 2024 and 2025, exposing risks related to browser extensions and prompt injection:

2024 vulnerability

A vulnerability dubbed CrossBarking was identified, where a malicious extension could exploit private APIs in the Opera browser. Despite appearing safe, the extension, submitted via the Chrome Web Store, could access privileged APIs when installed in Opera. This allowed it to take screenshots, hijack sessions, and modify browser settings such as DNS-over-HTTPS. 

The attack worked by injecting JavaScript into trusted Opera subdomains with overly permissive access, including sites like pinboard.opera.com and crypto-corner.op-test.net. Although Opera patched the issue in September 2024, it demonstrated how cross-browser extension attacks can bypass sandboxing and compromise user privacy.

2025 vulnerability

A more targeted issue was found in Opera Neon, an experimental AI browser. The vulnerability involved prompt injection via hidden HTML elements. When users asked the AI assistant to summarize a webpage, it processed not just visible content, but also hidden elements, such as <span style=”opacity: 0″>, containing malicious instructions. 

In a proof-of-concept attack, this flaw was used to extract a user’s email address from their logged-in Opera account and send it to an attacker-controlled server. Opera initially dismissed the report but later acknowledged and patched the issue after further investigation.

These incidents show that AI-assisted browsing introduces new attack surfaces. Features like AI page summarization and tool access can become liabilities when the AI lacks proper safeguards against untrusted content.
